Denali (from the native Athabascan language meaning "the great one"). This gorgeous red dun gelding is 5 years old and is super gentle. He also arrived in December and he came in with an injury to his hind leg. We had it x-rayed to find out he has some ligament damage. He doesn't limp or favour it at any gait so he is sound but he should be monitored and will be suitable to train for light riding in his future. He is halter broke, easy to trim and super easy to handle and catch.

Juneau is our youngest resident, born to Alba on June 20. She is a spunky and funny little filly, always playing or napping. Her momma was saved from the slaughter house in December so we're lucky to even know this little gal. She is full of independence and curiosity, even at such a young age. She will grow up to be stunning, just like her mom.

Birch is new to the rescue, recently arriving with 6 others and with no background information. He is still a stud and will be gelded once quarantine is over. At that time we will be able to determine his age. He is unhandled and weary of humans but we will work hard to gain his trust.

Titan is new to the rescue, recently arriving with 6 others and with no background information. He is still a stud and will be gelded once quarantine is over. At that time we will be able to determine his age and his obvious physical limitations due to leg swelling and some soreness. He is unhandled but has quickly become very friendly and seeks out scratches and attention.

Some of our vet bills include surgeries, wound care, dentals, meds, x-rays, bandage changes, and sometimes euthanasia. We are committed to providing the very best care for all the horses we get calls about and the ones we bring into our rescue.
Our vet bills and medications average about $2,000 per month.
We welcome any amount of financial support to help with vet bills.
Our feed bills are over $25,000 to cover the off season and we will continue to supplement most of the rescue horses with grain and pellets throughout the year. Some of the horses require specialized diets, medications and supplements which are generally quite costly. If you're interested in making a regular (or one time) donation to help us cover feed costs, you'll be contributing to the welfare of the entire rescue herd.
Our current feed cost per horse per month averages about $175.
We welcome any amount of financial support to help with feed bills.
Kenny is 3 years old and she came in with Draco and several others as a wild and unhandled teen. For now, she's still a touch nervous but has been eating grain from the feed pan while we hold and she's starting to learn that humans are okay. She likes to stay near to the other horses but is quite independent and not herd bound. She is well built and has the prettiest markings. She'll be a real stunner when she's full grown. She loves to engage with her foster mom, coming when called and following her around everywhere she goes.
Teeter is a new momma, giving birth to "Baby Ray" on April 11. Teeter was heading to the slaughter house with a few other pregnant mares - Velvet and Alba. She arrived at the rescue on December 29 and she settled in to her new surroundings quite quickly. She seems happy to see us as she always ventures over to say hello. She loves to be near people but she's not fond of being touched yet. We will give her more time to just "be a horse" and will start working with her a bit more once "Baby Ray" settles in.
Velvet is a pregnant mare that was heading to the slaughter house with a few other pregnant mares - Teeter and Alba. She arrived at the rescue on December 29 and took a few weeks to settle in. Today, she seems very happy to see us pull up to the pasture and with the others, ventures over to say hello. We can only touch her face once in awhile, she seems to be unhandled but sweet nonetheless. We are not sure when she's due to foal, but we're certain it will be a stunning baby!
Aponi (from the Siksika/Blackfoot word apaniiwa meaning "butterfly") arrived with four other horses last December, defeated and confused about being moved around. This quiet mare is about 25 years old and was super skinny. We had her teeth done and started giving her supplements to help put on some weight. She is probably broke to ride but we are adopting her as companion only due to her age. She deserves a nice retirement.
Ember arrived with four other horses on December 17, with no hope and no person to love them. This gelding is about 4 or 5 years old and is a cautious boy, but once he knows you won't hurt him, he settles in for some soothing scratches and gentle pats. He is in good physical condition and is halter broke but he needs a lot of time to decompress and learn to trust.
Meet Willow, the old grey mare that's been making babies her whole life. Willow and Moon (who is now on our Memory Wall page) came in as a bonded pair and she holds a special place in our hearts for so many reasons. Due to her age and her body condition, Willow will likely become a permanent resident at JRR unless we find the perfect forever home that will let her just be a horse. She was extremely fearful when we first met her but over time we've been earning her trust and are able to hand feed her now. She has a very kind eye and a feisty spirit, but gets along well with all other horses, both mares and geldings.
This beautiful cremello mare was saved from going to slaughter and she's pregnant! She's super sweet and started off a bit aloof while she was still figuring out where she is and why her world got turned upside down. We have been able to pet her quite a bit and she is first to the fence to greet us. She's at the bottom of the herd, just gentle and minds her own business all the time. She gave birth to Juneau on June 20 and is a great momma!
Baby Ray was born at the rescue on April 11 and has quickly grown to love humans. She's so excited to see us and she is already quite independent from her mother Teeter. Baby Ray has a super sweet personality and has been handled daily, making her brave and gentle at the same time. She will be available for adoption in the fall once she is weaned from her mother.
Little Tim is our youngest resident, born May 6 to Velvet. He is a spunky little guy and he sticks close to mom until he figures out what is safe in this world. He has a beautiful colour and he loves to buck and play. He will be available for adoption in the fall once he's weaned from his mother.
Star and his best friend Mack were surrendered to us in February after their family found themselves unable to care for them. Star is a star indeed as he is a former therapy horse and is now 29 years old. He's earned the right to enjoy his retirement with lots of love and treats for the rest of his life. He absolutely loves attention and has the sweetest personality.
Mack and his best friend Star were surrendered to us in February after their family found themselves unable to care for them. They are both trained under saddle but Mack is 27 years old so we just want him to enjoy his retirement with lots of love and treats for the rest of his life. He is the Big Mack around here, a solid and soulful dude that is protective of Star and so loving of humans.
